“That’s her. I saw her tonight. She’s the lady in the mirror. In Ted’s house, in the wardrobe. That’s her, I swear it is. Just for a second, she was there. Looking just like this. Except she wasn’t smiling.” The emotions became overwhelming for Mary, and she began to sob until her shoulders shook.

“Come on, love, don’t be like this.” Bert struggled to deal with a crying woman even if it was his wife of decades gone. “Tell us exactly what happened.” Mary sipped her brandy tea and then told Bert and Jayne exactly what had happened.

“I can see you’re shocked, Mum, but why are you crying so hard?”

“I’m not sure, love. I guess it’s the shock. I’ve never seen a ghost before.”

“You’ve not seen a ghost, Mum. You’re just tired. You’ve been working on Ted’s house and wondering who the girl in the picture is and thinking of Ted and who he was to her. Then the wardrobe falling over and Dad’s tools and everything and it’s just become too much for you. That’s all, you haven’t seen a ghost.”

“Whatever you think, Jayne, but you weren’t there. Trust me. I know what I saw, and it wasn’t exactly like the photo you have of her either. She looked at me just for a second, and I felt it, I felt how she felt. She was so, so sad.” Mary started to cry again, and it was several hours before she could get it out of her head and get a few hours’ sleep.
